Granada 's acclaimed ten-part adaptation of Stan Barstow's classic novel A KIND OF LOVING (12) is a landmark in television drama. This sensitively performed and faithfully adapted series is available on DVD from Network on 10 th August 2009, RRP £29.99. This is also the first time that the much sought-after series is available in any format.
This beautiful, emotionally rich story is set in 1957. Miner's son Vic Brown (Clive Wood – London's Burning) meets Ingrid Rothwell (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer – The Singing Detective), an attractive young typist, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. They begin an intense, all-consuming relationship. They marry in haste when Ingrid discovers that she is pregnant, and move in with Ingrid's mother. As the reality and banality of marital life starts to take hold and the physical lust and passion fades, Vic becomes frustrated and his sense of claustrophobia grows.
Following in depth the emotional development of the protagonists over a period of 15 years, A KIND OF LOVING features powerful performances from Clive Wood and Joanne Whalley – here in her first major television role. This series was originally screened in 1982 and was only kept from the Number One ITV spot by Coronation Street, pulling in 15 million viewers on average.
